Kevin Owens vs. Goldberg: WWE Fastlane 2017 Match Set

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 10:13 p.m. ET

Kevin Owens and Goldberg are set to main event the 2017 WWE Fastlane pay-per-view.

Kevin Owens has held the WWE Universal Championship since the August 29 episode of Raw, becoming the second Superstar to hold the belt. This came after Finn Balor, who suffered a shoulder injury at SummerSlam 2016, had to drop the title just one day after winning it. KO has successfully defended the belt in every opportunity since.

After retaining the belt at Royal Rumble and last Monday’s episode of Raw, Owens needed an opponent for the Fastlane pay-per-view. So during a segment with he and Chris Jericho on February 6’s episode of Raw, Goldberg would interrupt them and challenge for the Universal Championship. Owens didn’t seem receptive to this, but Y2J was, as he accepted the match at Fastlane for his best friend.

While not confirmed to be, this is the likely main event for Fastlane. This joins Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman, which would be confirmed earlier in the night.

Last week, we noted a rumor from the Wrestling Observer how Owens vs. Goldberg had been a planned match for Fastlane for the Universal Title. So Raw’s events made this become true.

The former WCW star is the likely favorite to win this match. Him losing to Owens would be a bit surprising, especially since the blockbuster match with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 33 becoming official. It’s the first bout set, so there’s going to be plenty of importance placed on it as we get closer to April 2. Might that mean it becomes for the Universal Championship?
