4 things that need to happen at WWE Extreme Rules

Dean Ambrose invented an actual "Asylum" in which he promises to punish Chris Jericho with various weapons and household items suspended high above the ring in what will likely be the most extreme match at Extreme Rules - but there's good reason for fans to be skeptical.

WrestleMania 32 featured a thematically similar "no holds barred" match involving Ambrose and Brock Lesnar, and in the weeks leading up to the event Ambrose was presented with [incredibly dangerous] weapons from hardcore legends like Mick Foley and Terry Funk. Some of those same weapons are even back for Extreme Rules!

Ambrose's WrestleMania match with Lesnar was generally regarded as underwhelming because the match itself didn't deliver the brutality that the promos promised. Lesnar suplexed Ambrose a bunch of times and there were a few nasty kendo stick shots, but that was it. In the Attitude Era both men would have been covered in blood five minutes in, but as John Cena lamented after WrestleMania, that's not the way WWE works anymore.

That's not to say that Ambrose and Jericho need to have a bloody match, but they need to do something crazy. If wrestlers aren't going to use the crazy barbed-wire bat hanging above the ring, it shouldn't be there in the first place. Don't tease fans.

Rusev was perhaps the biggest loser in the failed League of Nations run, as it hid how good he can be as a singles performer. It seems unlikely that Rusev will be shoved into the crowded WWE or Intercontinental title picture, but giving him the U.S. title puts Rusev back in his pre-League wheelhouse.

Since picking up the Intercontinental title the night after WrestleMania 32, The Miz has almost felt like a caretaker champion as the likes of Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn have been consistently delivering outstanding performances over the last month and a half.

The Miz is genuinely entertaining and has been much better since the return of Maryse, but it's pretty clear that Owens and Zayn are the future. Giving the belt to Owens and Zayn and having them fight it out for the next few pay-per-views (which would never get old), or rewarding Cesaro with his first Intercontinental title reign both seem like better options than having them all chase The Miz.

Nothing against Natalya, who is very good, but since Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch and Charlotte put in a match-of-the-night performance at WrestleMania 32, Charlotte vs. Natalya has been the main women's division focus of two consecutive pay-per-views and nearly every episode of Raw.

As a result, a number of women's segments have been interrupted with "we want Sasha" chants from fans. WWE either needs to give its women more matches each pay-per-view, or figure out a way to rotate in some of the rising talent into the title picture (Banks is rumored to be recovering from injury, which could also help explain her absence). It's not that what we're seeing is bad, but the division is now deep enough that if only one women's match is going to make it on the card, fan-favorites will invariably be left out.
