Young, Virginia Tech women beat NC State in ACC tourney

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) Hannah Young hit a long jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining to help the 15th-seeded Virginia Tech women beat No. 10 seed North Carolina State in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament on Wednesday.
Virginia Tech (11-19) had lost nine in a row and went 1-15 in conference regular-season play, but advanced to Thursday's second round to play seventh-seeded Pittsburgh.
Vanessa Panousis had 19 points and eight assists, Sidney Cook scored 12 and Kelsey Conyers 10 for the Hokies, which improved to 1-15 all-time against N.C. State.
Young finished with nine points, all in the final 7:02.
Miah Spencer converted a three-point play, after she was fouled by Young on a jumper, to give N.C. State (16-14) a 56-55 lead with 15 seconds left.
Panousis drove into the key and, as the defense collapsed, found Young, who hit the winner with her left foot on the 3-point line, in the corner.
Spencer led the Wolfpack, who made just 5 of 19 (26 percent) second-half field goals, with 19 points.
