Weisner helps No. 7 Oregon State beat UCLA 82-64

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) Coach Scott Rueck said his No. 7 Oregon State squad demonstrated its depth during Monday night's 82-64 trouncing of UCLA, in which five Beavers scored in double figures.
''It's one of our strengths. Everybody can score. Everybody can play. We've got 10 that can produce on both ends of the floor,'' he said.
''It just frees up our motion so we can make good passes and good reads,'' added Oregon State center Ruth Hamblin, who had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Jamie Weisner led the way with 18 points, all in the first half, and Sydney Wiese added 13 points and nine assists for the Beavers (20-1).
Jordin Canada had 19 points and 5 assists for the Bruins (8-13).
Oregon State shot 46.6 percent to UCLA's 40 percent, and outrebounded the Bruins 42-32.
The Beavers trailed 9-4 early in the game before going on an 18-4 run fueled by three Weisner 3-pointers.
Weisner came into the game needing 15 points to become the 18th Oregon State player to reach 1,000 points. The junior hit the milestone, then passed it, with a pair of free throws with 3:26 left in the first half.
The Beavers led 42-31 at the break, and stretched the lead to as many as 22 in the second half.
Hamblin came into the contest leading the Beavers with 14.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game. She was second in the nation in shooting percentage at 62.9 percent.
Nirra Fields entered Monday leading the Bruins with 15 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. She had 11 points on Monday but shot 3 for 13.
Close credited the Oregon State's team defense for limiting Fields. ''It's not one person. It's how they rotate. . More than anything, they play extremely hard every possession and they cover for each other,'' she said.
Rueck said the help defense is better than in previous seasons. ''It's hard to get to the rim against us,'' he said. ''This conference and the talented guards within this conference force you to be very good defensively.''
TIP-INS
UCLA is 0-8 against ranked teams this season, and has dropped its last 15 games against top 25 teams. . The Bruins have seven freshmen on the roster, nearly half the team.
Oregon State is 10-0 at home, and the men's team also hasn't lost at Gill Coliseum this season. The only other school in the nation with that distinction is Wichita State. . The Beavers lone loss on the season came at No. 6 Tennessee.
YOUNG GUNS, STILL LEARNING
UCLA's recruiting class was ranked best in the nation last year, but this has been a season of learning, Close said. ''It's not about your talent and your ratings and whatever else. It's about your hard work. It's about togetherness. It's about sacrificing yourself for the sake of the team,'' she added.
HISTORIC TEAM
The Beavers record is their best ever, and their No. 7 ranking, up from No. 9 last week, also is the school's best ever.
GIBSON MILESTONE
Oregon State senior Ali Gibson only had three points on Monday, but that brought her career total to 1,153, and moved her into the top 10 of the Beavers' career scoring list.
