Rice women's coach Williams retires from alma mater

HOUSTON (AP) Rice women's basketball coach Greg Williams has retired.

The 68-year-old Williams announced his resignation Tuesday after coaching at his alma mater for 10 seasons.

Williams was 141-170 record in 10 seasons at Rice. The Owls were 9-21 in his final season, which ended with a 62-57 loss to Old Dominion in the opening round of the Conference USA tournament.

Williams has an overall college record of 342-309 in stops that also included Houston and Colorado State.

Williams played for Rice in the late 1960s, earning All-Southwest Conference honors and the league's co-MVP award in 1969. He graduated in 1970 with a physical education degree.

Williams in 2011 was inducted into the Rice Athletics Hall of Fame.
