Odyssey Sims and No. 9 Baylor are still scoring a lot of points after a lengthy break for final exams.
Sims had 25 points and seven assists, and the Lady Bears reached triple figures for the third game in a row, and fifth time this season, in a 100-57 victory Sunday over Houston Baptist in their first game in nine days.
''It's kind of been a stressful week,'' said Sims, who entered the game as the nation's leading scorer with 30 points a game. ''We've been worrying about finals. Coach gave us (Saturday) and Friday off, but I think today we came out and were ready to play. I'm very impressed with how we played, just given that we had two days off. That's not something coach does all the time.''
The Lady Bears (8-1) extended their home-court winning streak to a national-best 65 games. They were playing for the first time in nine days, since a 133-130, four-overtime loss to No. 5 Kentucky at the Dallas Cowboys' stadium on Dec. 6.
Baylor's five 100-point games this season have already set a school record in NCAA competition. The Lady Bears had four 100-point games four previous times, the last in Brittney Griner's freshman season in 2009-10. They had 11 such games in AIWA competition in 1977-78.
Freshman forward Nina Davis made all seven of her shots while scoring 16 points for Baylor. Sune Agbuke had 12 points and 14 rebounds, while Khadijiah Cave had 12 points.
Four Baylor freshmen - Davis, Cave, Ieshia Small and Imani Wright - combined for 36 points and 19 rebounds.
''This team is, as you can see, they're very talented, but they have a joyful inexperience about them. They learn how to move past a mistake, and sometimes freshmen don't do that,'' coach Kim Mulkey said. ''But Sune and Kristina (Higgins) are like freshmen. The only advantage they had is they had to guard that older bunch that graduated every day, and that was an advantage for them. But there's no substitute for game experience.''
Baylor put the game out of reach with a 22-4 run - capped by consecutive layups by Agbuke - that made it 28-9.
Houston Baptist (3-5) had turnovers on six of its first 10 possessions, and finished with 20.
Tayler Jefferson had 13 points for the Huskies, who played for the first time in 12 days. Shanice Steenholdt had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Baylor led 51-25 at halftime after a half-ending 14-4 run and two scores in the final 11 seconds. Davis had a layup with 11 seconds left, then Sims had a steal and drove for a layup with 1.7 seconds left.
Jefferson hit a 3-pointer to start the second half for Houston, but Baylor then scored 10 straight points.
Steenholdt, who leads Houston Baptist in in scoring, rebounds, blocks and steals, had one steal and no blocks.
''I thought she came back in the second half and battled a little bit harder,'' Houston Baptist coach Donna Finnie said. ''A couple of times in the first half, I think she felt she should have had the call that wasn't called. She let that get to her. In the second half, she crashed harder and took more responsibility on the offensive end. She definitely picked it up.''
