No. 21 Maryland 73, Monmouth, N.J. 40

Freshman Laurin Mincy scored 15 points, 12 in the first half, to lead No. 21 Maryland to a 73-40 victory over Monmouth on Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
Diandra Tchatchouang and Lynetta Kizer added 11 points apiece for the Terrapins, and Alyssa Thomas scored 10.
Alysha Womack scored 13 points for Monmouth.
The Terrapins reeled off 22 straight points early in the first half to take a 24-2 lead and were never seriously threatened. Their defense spurred much of the run - they had 11 steals in the first half and 14 in the game.
Maryland made its first 18 free throws, finishing 19 for 21. The Terrapins also used their size advantage to outscore the Hawks 40-2 in the paint.
Maryland is now 33-7 in home openers, and 4-0 all time against Monmouth.
