North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell is using the first few games of the season to test her team's depth.

It appears the 20th-ranked Tar Heels have plenty to draw on.

Freshman Brittany Rountree made her first start and scored 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, while senior forward Laura Broomfield had 13 and10 rebounds in a 91-34 romp over brand new Division I member South Carolina Upstate.

''I'm just letting them all play and seeing what they can and can't do,'' Hatchell said. ''It's fun because we've got so many good things happening. We've got a lot of talent. They're young and just need time.''

The Tar Heels (2-0) were playing for the second straight day, having drubbed visiting Gardner-Webb 109-44 in their season opener.

She'la White also had 13 points for UNC, while sophomore guard Latifah Coleman chipped in a career-high 11 and freshman Megan Buckland 10.

All 10 healthy UNC players scored for the second straight day, and everyone got at least four points.

''It was nice to start,'' said Rountree, who replaced Buckland in the starting lineup from the opener. ''I just wanted to go out and play hard. Starting motivates me to work even harder. But we have so many good guards we help make each other better. It doesn't matter who starts.''

Tee'Ara Copney led Upstate with 16 points.

Atlantic Sun Conference member Upstate (0-2) is playing in its first regular season in Division I, having completed its transition from Division II.

Sunday's meeting, the Tar Heels' 52nd straight November victory, was the first between the teams.

''We just want our program to get a little bit of exposure and play against good competition,'' Upstate coach Tammy George said. ''They exposed a lot of our weaknesses and showed us what we need to work on, and we were able to work on the zone. We told them we had nothing to lose and just go out and play hard. They're human like we are.''

UNC shot 54.8 percent from the floor to the Spartans' 24.1, outrebounded them 48-25 and committed 15 turnovers to 23 for Upstate.

''I'm just happy with the mentality,'' Broomfield said. ''I'm not taking the early games off, and I'm happy with the way I'm playing. I really like how the scoring is spread. And I really like the way Rountree and (Danielle) Butts are playing on defense.''

UNC led 48-12 at halftime, shooting 52.9 percent to the visitors' 19.2 during the period. Copney scored the first eight points for the Spartans, who trailed 36-8 before Hannah Ohl knocked down a jumper with 5:42 left in the half.

The Tar Heels' biggest lead was 61 on two occasions over the final three minutes.

Krista Gross led UNC, which plays its first five games at Carmichael Arena, in rebounding with eight.
