No. 19 West Virginia women win Savannah Invite title

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) Tynice Martin scored 16 points, Lanay Montgomery had 13 points and No. 19 West Virginia held off Auburn 56-52 on Thursday night to win the Savannah Invitational.

Auburn, which trailed by 14 points in the first half, took its first lead of the game at 45-44 on Katie Frerking's layup with 8:04 to play. West Virginia didn't make its first field goal of the fourth quarter until the 6:29 mark.

Jessica Jones made a layup for Auburn to tie it at 52-all with 1:19 left. After West Virginia called a timeout with 33.5 seconds left, Montgomery made a layup for a 54-52 lead with 12 seconds remaining.

Auburn missed a 3-pointer with eight seconds left and Martin sealed it with two free throws.

Muldrow added eight points and 14 rebounds for West Virginia (6-0), which is off to its best start since the 2010-11 season when the Mountaineers won 16 straight.

Frerking made five 3-pointers and had her third double-double in four games for Auburn (5-1) with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
