No. 17 Rutgers shuts down Indiana 66-51 in Big 10 opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Betnijah Laney had 20 points and 10 rebounds and No. 17 Rutgers' defense stymied Indiana's offense Sunday afternoon to open Big 10 Conference play with a 66-51 win.

Laney had her ninth double-double of the season, this one coming after she sat out a game with a sprained thumb. Tyler Scaife added 16 points and Kahleah Cooper had 13 while Rachel Hollivay grabbed 12 rebounds.

Larryn Brooks led Indiana with 13 points.

The Hoosiers (10-2) entered the game ranked ninth nationally in field goal percent at .485 while Rutgers (10-2) was eighth in field goal defense at .329. Indiana shot 30 percent (15-50), including 27.6 in the first half to trail 28-24 and the 51 total points was more than 33 below its average.

Rutgers had a 7-0 surge that turned into a 16-5 run, capped by 3-pointers from Cynthia Hernandez on three straight possessions, to lead 50-34 with 10:23 to play.
