Vergeer claims 5th U.S. Open wheelchair title

Esther Vergeer won her 396th straight wheelchair match, defeating Daniela di Toro 6-0, 6-0 to capture the U.S. Open title Sunday.

Vergeer, the 29-year-old from The Netherlands, won her fifth U.S. Open and 16th Grand Slam championship. She has had only one match point against her during her streak, at the 2008 Paralympics.

She did get pushed this year, defeating Florence Alix-Gravellier 7-5, 7-5 in her first-round match, but Vergeer only lost one game over the next two matches en route to the title.
