At the U.S. Open on Wednesday, there were several upsets of note. Here’s a quick look at what we saw.
Perhaps the most notable upset of the day at the U.S. Open was fifth seed Milos Raonic bowing out to American Ryan Harrison. Harrison won in four sets 6-7 (4), 7-5, 7-5, 6-1. While Raonic certainly didn’t play his best in this match, Harrison really upped his game and came through with a great victory for him. Next up, he will play Marcos Baghdatis in the third round.
Raonic losing really opens up that quarter for Rafael Nadal. Now, Nadal is the definite favorite to advance out of that quarter. I think that he will and, in many ways, it would be great if he could make a run at the U.S. Open.
Novak Djokovic advanced via walkover, which was probably a good thing for him, as it gave him more of a chance to rest. Some other top players who advanced included Marin-Cilic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
On the women’s side, Garbine Muguruza lost to Anastasija Sevastova 7-5, 6-4. Muguruza, who did not look great in her first round win, was the third seed at the tournament. On the whole, she hasn’t had a great last few tournaments. Although she did advance to the semis in Cincinnati, she never played great matches, as a few announcers noted. Here, she simply didn’t look very good. She has, however, had a very successful year, as she secured her first Grand Slam title. I’m sure that she will have better performances in majors in the future.
Another smaller upset was Caroline Wozniacki defeating Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 6-4.
Angelique Kerber continued her march to try and take the top ranking in the world from Serena Williams by defeating Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in straight sets. Although pressed in the second set, Kerber saved two set points and persevered 6-2, 7-6 (7). Other top players who won included Madison Keys, Petra Kvitova, and Roberta Vinci.
Doubles action also got underway. The Bryan Brothers won, but the second seeded team of Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo lost to American Nicholas Monroe and Donald Young.
