U.S. Open Tuesday Recap

More top players began their quest for the title on Tuesday at the U.S. Open. Here’s a very brief recap of who won and lost.
At the U.S. Open, Serena Williams beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-3 to secure her spot in the second round. Venus Williams still won but had a far harder time with Kateryna Kozlova of the Ukraine. Williams did advance, however, by a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
Agnieszka Radwanska advanced, as did Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, and Sam Stosur. Eugenie Bouchard lost in the first round, as did Ana Ivanovic. This is her third straight first-round loss in majors.
On the men’s side, Andy Murray dispatched Lukas Rosol 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Stan Wawrinka overcame a tough matchup to defeat Fernando Verdasco 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-4. Kei Nishikori also won and American Steve Johnson fought off seven match points in a five-set win over Evgeny Donskoy of Russia. Ivo Karlovic fired 61 aces in a five-set victory over Yen-Hsun Lu.
One small upset worth noting: Janko Tipsarevic defeated American Sam Querrey 7-6 (4), 6-7 (0), 6-3, 6-3. Although not an auspicious tournament for Querrey, the man who defeated Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, all credit to Tipsarevic for coming into the U.S. Open and knocking off a seeded player. For somebody who has struggled so mightily with injuries, Tipsarevic deserves credit for winning this match.
