Top-seeded Tomas Berdych cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win Tuesday over Frederico Gil of Portugal to move into the second round of the Chennai Open.

The No. 6-ranked Berdych won in 45 minutes and will meet Croatian Ivan Dodig.

Fourth-seeded Richard Gasquet of France and seventh-seeded Xavier Malisse of Belgium also had straight-set wins.

Berdych, who made it to the 2010 Wimbledon final after beating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, overpowered his 101st-ranked opponent, who managed to win only the sixth game of the second set.
