Spain names new Fed Cup captain

Published Jan. 26, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

Former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez will captain Spain's Fed Cup team.

The Spanish tennis federation said Saturday that Martinez is replacing Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who resigned last December.

The 40-year-old Martinez became the only Spanish woman to win the Wimbledon singles title in 1994.

Federation president Jose Escanuela said ''Conchita is a legend of Spanish tennis, and it is convenient that people who have given so much to our sport have the chance to continue helping.''
