The first WTA tournament of 2013 will have a pair of Grand Slam champions from 2012 in the field: Wimbledon and U.S. Open winner Serena Williams and French Open titleholder Maria Sharapova.

Brisbane International tournament officials said Thursday that Williams and Sharapova would join the previously-announced Andy Murray, who won his first Grand Slam singles title at the U.S. Open on Monday, in the Dec. 30-Jan. 6 ATP-WTA tournament.

Williams, who won the London Olympics singles gold medal in August, beating Sharapova in the final, and doubles gold with sister Venus, advanced to the Brisbane quarterfinals early this year before withdrawing with a left ankle sprain.

Sharapova, who completed her career Grand Slam with a win at Roland Garros in June, is making her first appearance at the Brisbane International.
