Safina takes indefinite break

Former No. 1 tennis player Dinara Safina says she is taking an indefinite break from tennis in the hope of recovering from chronic back pain.

The former No. 1 told the Russian daily Sport Express on Thursday that she will miss the upcoming French Open where she has twice reached the final.

She says she will take as much time as it takes to resolve her health issues, adding ''I don't want to torture myself any longer.''

The 25-year-old Safina is the sister of retired former two-times Grand Slam winner Marat Safin. She has reached three Grand Slam finals in all but has never won a major.
