Andy Roddick beat Jeremy Chardy of France 6-4, 7-6 (4) on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals at the Japan Open.
The second-seeded American said Chardy is ''always dangerous because he plays high-risk tennis'' but felt more assured when forced into longer rallies.
Roddick, playing his first ATP tournament since losing in the second round of the U.S. Open, served only five aces but won 83 percent of his first serve points.
Rafael Nadal, the world No. 1 player, was scheduled to meet Canadian Milos Raonic later Thursday.
