Nick Kyrgios will have his suspension reduced. The move is critical for the young Australian’s upcoming 2017 season.

Nick Kyrgios has agreed to see a sports psychologist. Details are unclear, but the ATP announced that, “Nick has taken up the care plan on offer to him from the ATP. The details and contents of the plan are strictly confidential.”

While the details of his treatment remain unknown, the move allows the 21-year-old Australian tennis player to qualify for competitive play within weeks. He is not scheduled, however, to play in any of the remaining 2016 ATP events.

Nick Kyrgios is set to appear in a star-studded field at the ITF sponsored 2017 Hopman Cup. The Australian joined Daria Gavrilova to win the 2016 title at the event. After his success at the 2016 version of the event, Kyrgios went on to also win 3 ATP titles throughout the season.

His early momentum faded, however, and Kyrgios had his season cut short for displaying a lack of effort at the Shanghai Masters.

Agreeing to receive treatment and see a sports psychologist is the right move for the young tennis player. He is a rising star in the sport, already reaching a world ranking of 13 in October 2016. With the right team supporting him, Kyrgios can make waves in the sport. Even British tennis star Andy Murray has spoken out on behalf of the Australian and other young athletes. Murray cited his own experience of being thrust into the spotlight at a young age and the pressures that come with it. It’s a positive sign to see that Kyrgios is making the moves to set himself up for continued high level play in 2017.
