Juan Monaco of Argentina ousted defending champion Andy Murray 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 Wednesday in the second round of the Valencia Open.

The top-seeded Murray began sluggishly and lost his opening service game. He was broken five times total, including twice in the third set.

"Juan plays very well. I know he has been injured for a while, but ... he played a very good, constant game," Murray said. "It is easy to lose against him if you are not on your best game."

The 23-year-old Scot had attended his brother Jamie's wedding as best man last week. The brothers are playing in the doubles competition as partners.
