Monfils to open for France against Canada in Davis Cup

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 10:44 p.m. ET

POINTE-A-PITRE, Guadeloupe (AP) Gael Monfils will open for France against Frank Dancevic of Canada in their Davis Cup first round tie on clay.

French Davis Cup captain Yannick Noah picked Monfils despite the player's criticism of the decision to play overseas. Monfils questioned playing in Guadeloupe because of the logistics involved but made clear he was thrilled to play for his country.

Gilles Simon will take on Vasek Pospisil in the second singles match.

Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are set to take on Philip Bester and Pospisil in the doubles rubber.

Canada is without its top player Milos Raonic, sidelined by an adductor tear, and doubles specialist Daniel Nestor didn't travel to the French Caribbean islands because of a family matter.
