MARSEILLE, France (AP) Kristina Mladenovic punished some poor serving from Sara Errani to beat the former French Open runner-up 7-6 (4), 6-1 and give France a 2-1 lead against Italy in their Fed Cup first-round tie on Sunday.

Mladenovic was desperate to make amends for her loss to Camila Giorgi in Saturday's singles, and played with aggression against Errani, who lost both her rubbers following Saturday's defeat to Caroline Garcia.

Mladenovic won all seven points she played at the net in the first set and broke Errani three consecutive times in the second. After her win, she jumped into the arms of captain Amelie Mauresmo - a two-time Grand Slam champion.

Garcia can book France's place in the semifinals with a victory against Giorgi.

The tie in Marseille concludes with a doubles match.
