Jockey McNamara paralyzed after Cheltenham fall

Published Mar. 29, 2013 10:17 p.m. ET

A doctor says Irish jockey JT McNamara is paralyzed but in good spirits after his fall from a horse at the Cheltenham Festival.

Dr. Adrian McGoldrick, senior medical officer of the Irish Turf Club, says in a statement released Friday by the Injured Jockeys Fund that the 37-year-old McNamara is still hospitalized in Bristol, but is hoping to be transferred to Dublin ''in due course.''

The statement says McNamara ''suffered a serious neck injury resulting in paralysis,'' but that ''he has made progress in the last week and is in a very positive frame of mind.''

McNamara fractured two vertebrae in his neck after coming off Galaxy Rock in a race at the festival this month.
