Updated Mar. 4, 2020 7:31 p.m. ET

LONDON (AP) Slovenian-born tennis player Aljaz Bedene has lost his appeal to be able to compete for Britain in Davis Cup.

The International Tennis Federation says its board of directors ruled that the 26-year-old Bedene did not meet the eligibility requirements.

Bedene became a British citizen in March 2015 and represents Britain on the ATP Tour. He is currently ranked 57th.

The Lawn Tennis Association, which supported his appeal, said ''we will consider the options and continue to consult with Aljaz.''

Bedene says he is ''very sad with today's result and that it has not gone the way I had hoped.'''

He adds that he will ''decide on what steps to take next.''

The ITF did grant Russian-born player Daria Gavrilova the right to represent Australia in the Fed Cup.
