Hampton rallies in third set in Brussels

Jamie Hampton of the United States came back from 5-1 down in the third set Thursday to beat fifth-seeded Kirsten Flipkens 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 and advance to the quarterfinals of the Brussels Open.
Flipkens was the second home player that Hampton has beaten in as many days after she also came back from behind to beat Yanina Wickmayer in three sets on Wednesday.
The victory earned the 23-year-old Hampton a quarterfinal on Friday against second-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy, who also needed three sets to beat qualifier Yulia Putintseva of Kazakstan.
Eighth-seeded Peng Shuai of China was the first player in the rain-affected WTA tournament to reach the semifinals when she beat fourth-seeded Sloane Stephens of the United States 6-2, 6-3.
The tournament concludes Saturday.
