Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Japan Open with a win over compatriot Feliciano Lopez.
Garcia-Lopez, who won the Thailand Open on Sunday after beating top-ranked Rafael Nadal in the semifinals, saved four break points to defeat the sixth-seeded Lopez 7-6 (5), 6-4 on Wednesday.
Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic also advanced to the last eight with a 5-7, 7-6 (7) 4-1 win over Swiss opponent Marco Chiudinelli, who retired with a lower back injury.
Top-seeded Nadal will face qualifier Milos Raonic in the second round on Thursday.
