French Open announces prize money will rise to $34.5M

Prize money at the French Open will rise to more than  $34.5 million this year, an increase of $4.1 million from last year.

The men's and women's champions will receive nearly $2.28 million each, $207,000 more than 2013.

Tournament director and French Tennis Federation director Gilbert Ysern says ''this notable increase in Roland Garros prize money is part of the plan that was put in place for 2013 until 2016.''

There are also notable increases for losers in the second, third and fourth rounds.

The tournament begins on May 25.
