Fed Cup: Germany leads Romania 1-0 in World Group playoff

CLUJ, Romania (AP) Angelique Kerber has given Germany the lead against Romania in their Fed Cup World Group playoff, defeating Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2, 6-3.

It was the sixth meeting between the two players, with Kerber increasing her head-to-head lead to 4-2.

Sixth-ranked Simona Halep looks to level the tie against Andrea Petkovic later Saturday. The Romanian has won her last five matches against Petkovic.

Germany won the last time the two teams met, back in 1974.
