The Federal Communications Commission is ordering Comcast Corp. to make the Tennis Channel more readily available to customers.
Comcast, the nation's largest cable company, has required its customers to pay extra for the Tennis Channel. That network has sought to become available for no extra fee on a tier occupied by the Comcast-owned NBC Sports Network and the Golf Channel, and the FCC agreed on Tuesday.
Comcast said it has carried the Tennis Channel for seven years through a contract that its operators freely negotiated, and said the FCC order would drive up programming costs.
Comcast said it was appealing the decision to a federal court.
