Curley quits as US Open tourney head

Published Feb. 10, 2012 12:00 a.m. ET

Jim Curley is stepping down as tournament director for tennis' US Open, a post he's held since 2001.

The US Tennis Association announced Curley's move Friday. He will stay on as a consultant through this year's Grand Slam tournament, which runs Aug. 27 through Sept. 9.

Curley says he believes ''it is time for a change.''

Deputy tournament director David Brewer will take over as tournament director and oversee the USTA's professional tennis operations. Brewer will report directly to USTA executive director Gordon Smith.
