Arnaud Clement is France's new Davis Cup captain, replacing Guy Forget, who left the post in April after 14 seasons in charge.
The 34-year-old Clement played his last singles this week, a defeat to compatriot Kenny De Schepper in the first round of Wimbledon qualifiers.
The French Tennis Federation said Friday that it unanimously accepted the proposal to put the popular player in charge.
Clement says, ''it is an exciting challenge'' and ''a great source of pride for me to have the support of the players and the FFT.''

He added that he has set himself the goal of winning the Davis Cup — a competition France last won in 2001.
France was defeated by the United States in the quarterfinals this year.
