Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain upset 19th-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the French Open on Sunday.

Cilic had 67 unforced errors and was broken five times by the right-handed Spaniard, who sealed the win with a forehand attack on his first match point.

It was Cilic's earliest exit at Roland Garros since his first appearance at the clay-court Grand Slam in 2007.

Ramirez Hidalgo reached the fourth round at the French Open in 2006. He will next play either Albert Montanes of Spain or Marc Gicquel of France, who replaced the injured Lleyton Hewitt in the draw.
