MONTREAL (AP) France's Jermey Chardy beat American John Isner 6-7 (9), 7-6 (13), 7-6 (4) on Friday in a rain-delayed quarterfinal at the Rogers Cup.

The match began nearly 2 hours late and was interrupted more than an hour in the second set by another shower.

Chardy fought off five match points in the second-set tiebreaker. Isner missed a volley at the net and then hit wide on a service return on set point.

The 6-foot-10 Isner had won 11 of his previous 12 matches, taking the title two weeks ago in Atlanta and finishing second last week in Washington.

Chardy advanced to a semifinal against the winner of a match between top-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia and qualifier Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.

In the other quarterfinals, second-seeded Andy Murray of Scotland faced 10th-seeded defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, and seventh-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain was scheduled to play fourth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan.
