Caroline Wozniacki: 'I grew up so much' after Rory McIlroy breakup

It's been nearly a year since the news broke that golf star Rory McIlroy and tennis star Caroline Wozniacki had broken off their engagement.

Wozniacki in particular had a rocky road to traverse immediately following the breakup; her quick exit out of the French Open sent sports media tongues wagging about whether or not the star-crossed relationship was to blame.  

But since then, Wozniacki has bounced back from adversity like a champion and more than gotten her groove back, collecting a couple titles and vaulting back into the Top 10 of women's single title ranks. And after remaining relatively silent on the subject, the 24-year-old Dane spoke candidly with the Independent about her breakup with McIlroy and how she's emerged stronger as a result:

One of those close friends turned out to be women's No. 1 Serena Williams, with whom Wozniacki has vacationed in Miami and in New York, and who met her bestie at the finish line when Wozniacki ran the New York City Marathon for charity in November. 

Since then, Wozniacki has found a newfound strength, collecting a Malaysian Open title, a No. 5 world singles ranking and a photo shoot for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue along the way:
