Bosnia's Dzumhur upsets 5th-seeded Almagro at Croatia Open

UMAG, Croatia (AP) Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia-Herzegovina upset fifth-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 in the first round of the Croatia Open on Tuesday.

Almagro hit 10 aces but Dzumhur attacked his opponent's second serve, converting five out of nine break points. Dzumhur, ranked 81st, broke at 5-5 in the third set for victory and a place in the second round at Umag for the second year in a row.

Sixth-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain also advanced, defeating three-time Umag semifinalist Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-4, 6-4, while seventh-seeded Martin Klizan of Slovakia beat Spanish qualifier Enrique Lopez-Perez 6-2, 7-5. Klizan won his fifth career singles title last week in Hamburg.

Eighth-seeded Jiri Vesely defeated Michael Linzer 6-3, 6-1, while Gastao Elias eased to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Guillermo Garcia Lopez. Garcia Lopez broke in the opening game of the match but then won only two out of next fourteen games.

In other matches, Thomas Fabbiano advanced after leading 6-0, 4-1 against Franko Skugor, who retired in the second set, and Carlos Berlocq beat Filip Krajinovic 6-3, 6-1. Teymuraz Gabashvili defeated wild card Nino Serdarusic 6-4, 6-2, while Andrej Martin beat Sergiy Stakhovski 7-6 (6), 6-4.
