Baghdatis advances to quarterfinals in Montpellier

MONTPELLIER, France (AP) Eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis reached the quarterfinals of the Open Sud de France in Montpellier on Wednesday with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) win over Taro Daniel.
The 53rd-ranked Baghdatis, who won his first match this season in the previous round at the hard court tournament, fired eight aces and broke his opponent three times.
A former Australian Open runner-up, Baghdatis lost in the first round in Melbourne this year. He received a wild card to play in Montpellier and will next face either top-seeded Richard Gasquet or Ernests Gulbis.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals was Michael Berrer, who defeated qualifier Kenny De Schepper 6-3, 6-4.
