Angelique Kerber calls Australian Open win 'dream come true' in emotional speech
Angelique Kerber's win over Serena Williams in Saturday's Australian Open final was bound to get the emotions flowing, and that it did.
The first German to win a Grand Slam this century, Kerber took to the microphone after her win for the customary victory speech, checking off all the right boxes -- thanking sponsors and the tournament director, complimenting Serena, giving love to the fans, and acknowledging the support of her family and team.
"When I played here in the first round, I was match point down, so I was actually with one leg in the plane to Germany," she said, fighting back tears all the way. "And now I'm here. I think I get a second chance. ... I'm really honored to be here in this final and to win it. I mean, my dream come true tonight. This night.
"My whole life I was working really hard, and now I'm here and I can say I'm a Grand Slam champion, so it sounds really crazy and unbelievable."
She also called Serena an "inspiration" and an "unbelievable, great person."
