Acapulco organizers trying to reassure on security

Published Feb. 3, 2012 12:40 a.m. ET

Organizers of upcoming WTA and ATP tournaments in Acapulco, Mexico, are trying to reassure players and fans they will be safe in the Pacific resort city.

Tournament director Raul Zurutuza said Thursday that local, state and national officials have been working on security at the tournament and are trying to get the word out weeks before the event opens.

Acapulco has been hit by a wave of drug-related violence. A year ago the ATP said it was satisfied with security, but it warned players beforehand to stay near their hotel, arrive as late as possible and leave once eliminated.

The week-long tournament beginning on Feb. 27 is the largest tournament in Latin America.
