Wolverhampton Wanderers has reacted to its demotion to English football's third tier by firing manager Dean Saunders.

The club in central England was playing in the Premier League last season but has slipped to back-to-back relegations.

Saunders, a former Wales and Liverpool striker, became Wolves' fourth manager in 12 months when he was hired in January but couldn't halt the team's slide down the League Championship standings. It finished next-to-last after a 2-0 loss at Brighton on Saturday in its final match.

Wolves say Saunders' assistant, Brian Carey, will also be leaving the club.
