Wolfsburg director of sport Klaus Allofs has denied his club are interested in signing Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund.

The Wolves had been linked with Gundogan, who informed Dortmund earlier this week he would not be extending his contract beyond 2016, but Allofs says the speculation is not true.

The Germany international is almost certain to leave Dortmund in the summer rather than being allowed to leave, like Robert Lewandowski did, a year later on a free transfer.

"To link us with him is purely invented," Allofs told Kicker magazine on Tuesday.

The Wolfsburger Allgemeine newspaper suggested Gundogan could be reunited with Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking, who was his coach at Nurnberg and advised him to join Dortmund in 2011.

Bayern Munich have also been touted as potential suitors for the 24-year-old midfielder.
