Wolfsburg's general manager says the club has given up on signing Brazilian playmaker Diego from Juventus.

Dieter Hoeness said Thursday that "we closed the book ourselves" on the deal although there was no problem between Wolfsburg and Diego, who moved to Turin last year from Bundesliga rival Werder Bremen.

Hoeness said negotiations with Juventus were difficult - "first Diego was offered, and then declared not for sale. We want to end this to-and-fro now."

Wolfsburg, the 2009 champion, has been the Bundesliga's biggest preseason spender, with an estimated outlay of 23.4 million euors ($30 million).
