Whelan: Latics won't throw cash around

Martinez has endured a mixed debut season as Wigan manager as the club survived a brush with relegation from the Premier League. Though the Latics enjoyed famous home wins over Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, their inconsistent form kept their top-flight status in doubt up until last weekend. With Wigan now able to focus on another year of Premier League football, Whelan is keen to sit down with Martinez and discuss plans for next season. However, Whelan is wary of spending beyond the club's means and confirmed there will be departures from Wigan in the summer. "I will be sitting down with Roberto Martinez very soon to discuss budgets," said Whelan in the Daily Mail. "Some players will be staying, some will be going. "But one thing we won't do is go the way of Portsmouth and Hull, and just throw money around. We won't be stupid about it."
