Whelan has faith in Martinez

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan insists he retains 'complete and total faith' in manager Roberto Martinez.

The Latics are battling for Premier League survival and currently sit bottom of the table following a run of one win in 11 games.

Martinez's future at the DW Stadium has come under scrutiny, with Wigan having just nine fixtures left to retain their top-flight status.

However, Whelan is not ready to give the Spaniard the bullet and is confident that Martinez is the right man to guide the club to safety.

"I have complete and total faith in Roberto, and the stability of the club remains total," Whelan told the Wigan Observer.

"I have complete confidence that he will turn it round.

"I couldn't criticise Roberto at all for the way we're playing or the application of the lads just now."

Wigan's next game is at home to relegation rivals Birmingham City and Whelan is convinced the club can stave off demotion to the Championship.

He added: "We've got some very, very winnable matches coming up and we have to go out there and make sure we win them.

"I still think we can do it."
