West Ham stemmed the flow of upsets in the fourth round of the FA Cup by beating third-tier Bristol City 1-0 thanks to Diafra Sakho's late header on Sunday.

The Senegal international leaped high to meet a deep cross from fellow striker Andy Carroll, planting a firm header just inside the post in the 81st minute.

Chelsea and Manchester City were among five teams in the Premier League's top nine to be eliminated on Saturday on one of the most astonishing days in the famous competition's history.

West Ham toiled in the first half at Ashton Gate, clearing two headed attempts off the line, but improved after the break. Sakho, a substitute, struck the bar before scoring.

Carles Gil helped fire Aston Villa into the FA Cup fifth round as they avoided
an upset to beat Bournemouth 2-1.

The midfielder's first goal for the club on his full debut put the hosts ahead against the battling Cherries, who troubled Villa in the first half.

Andi Weimann's second-half strike - his first goal since November - then proved crucial as Villa extended their lead.

Callum Wilson replied deep into stoppage time but the visitors ran out of time to mount a comeback.
