West Brom signs Uruguay defender Lugano

West Bromwich Albion has signed Uruguay captain Diego Lugano on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, strengthening its defense ahead of the Premier League season.
West Brom said Lugano signed a two-year contract after passing a medical, but that the deal is still subject to international clearance.
Lugano was on loan at Malaga last season, helping the Spanish team reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League and finish sixth in the league. The 32-year-old central defender has captained Uruguay 77 times, with a total of 86 caps.
West Brom manager Steve Clarke said Lugano is ''an experienced center half who will increase competition in that area of the team,'' but added that ''Diego knows he's got a fight on his hands to get into the team.''
