West Bromwich Albion ended Birmingham's unbeaten Premier League record on Saturday with a comeback 3-1 win in the Midlands derby.
Birmingham took the lead when Cameron Jerome scored his first goal of the season in the 15th minute with a close-range volley set up by a header from Scott Dann.
Blues manager Alex McLeish signed a new three-year contract on Saturday and watched his team dominate the first half at The Hawthorns with Alexander Hleb - on loan from Barcelona - looking lively in his first Premier League match this season.
Promoted West Brom dominated after the interval, drawing level in the 51st when Dann scored an own goal. Jerome Thomas ran deep, crossed low and Dann, under pressure from Nigeria striker Peter Odemwingie, deflected the ball past Birmingham goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Odemwingie exploited a mistake from Lee Bowyer to put West Brom ahead in the 59th.
Bowyer was unable to control a ball sent into the area, Odemwingie calmly went past Foster and got a yellow card for his goal celebrations.
Bowyer also got a yellow card after fouling Gabriel Tamas and was immediately substituted. Bowyer appeared to exchange words with West Brom fans sitting behind the player and eventually moved seats.
Jonas Olsson made it 3-1 in the 69th with a header off an inswinging corner from Chris Brunt.
An unmarked Odemwingie earlier wasted a chance to put West Brom ahead in the 14th. His weak shot was easily saved by Foster after Thomas had entered the area and passed to Odemwingie.
The Baggies pushed for an equalizer, coming close when Foster stopped a shot from a narrow angle by Paul Scharner.
West Brom's Marc-Antoine Fortune header went wide after a cross from Gonzalo Jara in the 42nd.
Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo made a key move at the interval, replacing Fortune in midfield with Graham Dorrans and pushing Odemwingie into attack.
McLeish handed a debut to Hleb in the only change from Birmingham's team which drew with Liverpool 0-0 a week ago. The Belarus midfielder replaced James McFadden who damaged an anterior ligament during training on Friday.
Di Matteo kept the same side which drew 1-1 at home to Tottenham.
The Baggies have 7 points, one ahead of Midlands rival Birmingham. Both have played five games.
