Werder Bremen's top striker Claudio Pizarro has been banned for two matches for slapping Emanuel Pogatetz of Hannover in a Bundesliga match.

The incident was missed by the referee but television cameras showed the Peru striker catching Pogatetz's cheek with the palm of his left hand.

Bremen won the match 3-0 and Pizarro scored his 16th goal of the season. Pizarro said after the match he was just trying to move his hand away and did not intend to slap him.

Pizarro will miss matches against Borussia Dortmund and Augsburg.
