Weather delays Essien's departure

Freezing conditions in Britain have meant that Essien has not been able to get his scheduled flight to Angola for the African Cup of Nations. Essien, who has been struggling with a hamstring injury, was due to fly out on Monday in time for Ghana's scheduled opening clash with Togo - although he would not have played anyway. But Togo's withdrawal meant Ghana did not have a game, and will instead open their campaign against Ivory Coast on Friday. And Essien will be with his team-mates ahead of their game. "Essien was unable to make it out of London on Sunday. The bad weather prevented him from doing so as some flights were cancelled," a Ghana FA spokesman said. "We are still in touch and he is now booked to arrive on Wednesday and in time for our opening group game on Friday against Ivory Coast."
