The Brazilian government is removing an urban train project from the list of infrastructure work planned for the 2014 World Cup because it will not be ready in time.

Officials decided to abandon the project in the capital of Brasilia because irregularities during the bidding process caused delays that would not be overcome ahead of the World Cup.

The light train system linking the city's airport to the south region was considered a key legacy of the World Cup.

Officials say they will replace the project with a bus connection during football's showcase event. The urban train will still be built, but not for the World Cup.
