Wayne Rooney set his sights on a place in Manchester United's Carling Cup final side after his two-goal haul against West Ham on Tuesday night.

Rooney has been in great form all season and he was again the star of the show at Old Trafford as the Red Devils overcame Gianfranco Zola's side 3-0 to narrow the gap at the top of the Premier League.

The England striker scored two goals to take his tally for the campaign to 23 in the league and 27 in total.

He was substituted 12 minutes from time but could not complain despite missing the chance to complete a hat-trick.

"I am just enjoying playing and scoring goals," he told Sky Sports.

"Hopefully it continues but I have never really set targets."

Asked if had been frustrating to get taken off, Rooney replied: "A little bit but you can understand the manager's thinking and I've no problems with that tonight."

Rooney also had words of praise for Michael Owen, who netted an impressive goal moments after coming on.

Owen has had limited opportunities of late but Rooney expects him to play a vital role over the next couple of months.

He stated: "It was a great run and great finish and I'm pleased for him because he hasn't played a lot of football, especially over the last few months, but he showed what he can do.

"He'll be a big player for us between now and the end of the season. We know what he gives to the team and he's a great player for us."

Rooney is now looking ahead to the Wembley showpiece against Aston Villa this weekend after playing no part in last season's final victory over Tottenham.

"Obviously I missed it last year because I was a bit ill before the game so I didn't play but hopefully I can play this year," he said.
